Industry Snapshot

With a sky-rocketing growth rate in biotechnology that is outpacing other states, Colorado is poised to become a major player in the biotechnology industry. The industry, built on the strong foundation of a superior business climate, well-educated workforce, and diversified economic base, will be further aided by a state-wide strategic plan and economic development efforts to make biotechnology the next economic driver of the state.

Colorado's high quality of life comes from a combination of natural resources, diverse recreational opportunities, moderate climate, numerous cultural activites, world-class health care, and an excellent public school system. Colorado's economy is based in a variety of high-tech sectors as well as traditional industries, including biotechnology, aerospace, and defense industries.

Education

Colorado's population is very well-educated. In 2000, the census ranked Colorado 3rd in percentage of the population with a college degree and 9th in percentage of the population with a high school diploma.

History

The land of Colorado was originally inhabited by numerous American Indian tribes, including the Arapaho, the Utes, and the Anasazi, or ancestral Pueblo. Both the Spanish and French laid claims to Colorado, but in 1803, most of Colorado was sold to the United States as part of the Louisiana Purchase.
