Colorado Sunset From the spectacular scenery and world-class skiing of the Rocky Mountains to the diverse cultural opportunities in the cities, Colorado has something for everyone.

During the winter, ample snowfall provides world-class powder for the 26 skiing and snowboarding resorts in Colorado including Aspen, Vail, Breckenridge, Steamboat Springs, Telluride, Keystone, and Winter Park. Other popular winter activities include snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and snowmobiling.

In the summer, water sports are found in Colorado's great lakes and rivers. Fly fishing is enormously popular, as are whitewater rafting, kayaking and boating. Colorado boasts 167 miles of Gold Medal fishing streams offering many opportunities to catch large trout.

The Rockies are another popular summer destination for rock-climbing hiking, and mountain biking. Most ski areas open their slopes during the summer for mountain biking and hiking, offering lift service up or down the mountain. There are also plenty of opportunities to view wildlife, including Bighorn Sheep, Pronghorn Antelope, and elk. For a true old west experience, there are many dude and guest ranches throughout Colorado.

Magnificent scenery coupled with a rich history make sightseeing and photography popular year-round pastimes. Colorado is home to over 40 state parks, 3 national parks, 4 national monuments, 11 national forests, and 2 national grasslands. The popular Pike's Peak, located outside Colorado Springs is the tallest peak in Colorado, rising 14,110 on the eastern side of the Rocky Mountains. Visitors can hike trails or drive the second highest highway in the world to the top of Pike's Peak. Every year, auto and motorcycles racers compete in the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, the second oldest motorsports event in the United States. The Great Sand Dunes National Monument and Preserve is a lightly visited treasure and unique geologic wonderland. The monument is home to North America's tallest sand dunes, ancient forests, alpine lakes, tundra, and diverse wildlife and Rocky Mountain plant species. Children will especially enjoy experiencing the life of ancient pueblo cliff dwellers at Mesa Verde National Park, located in southwest Colorado. The pueblos inhabited this area for 700 years from 600 A.D. to 1300 A.D. building elaborate stone dwellings in the sheltered alcoves of the canyons walls.

Colorado’s cities and towns, such as Denver, Boulder and Colorado Springs, host events of interest to both visitors and residents. Fairs, rodeos, and festivals are common, and include the Colorado State Fair and Rodeo in Pueblo, the Strawberry Days in Glenwood Springs and Greeley's Independence Day Stampede. Red Rocks Amphitheater, a world-renowned venue for concerts near Denver, hosts events and musical acts all summer long. Colorado is a national leader in funding for the arts and is home to ballet, opera, Broadway, and excellent regional theater, including a Shakespeare Festival. Professional sports provide yet even more entertainment with the Colorado Avalanche (hockey), Colorado Rapids (Soccer), Colorado Rockies (baseball), Denver Broncos (football), and Denver Nuggets (basketball).
