Colorado's population is very well-educated. In 2000, the census ranked Colorado 3rd in percentage of the population with a college degree and 9th in percentage of the population with a high school diploma.

In Colorado's results-oriented K-12 system, ACT and SAT scores are consistently higher than the national averages. All K-12 students participate in the state's assessment system, CSAP, and based on the results, every school is issued a report card on annual progress. According to the Nation's Report Card, over the past 10 years Colorado's 4th and 8th graders have consistently received higher than average scores in mathematics, reading, science, and writing.

Colorado is home to 13 four-year colleges, the largest - the University of Colorado System - was founded in 1876 with a campus in Boulder. The U of C now includes four unique campuses (Boulder, Denver, Colorado Springs, and the Health Sciences Center in Denver) offering more than 200 degree programs. U of C is a nationally recognized leader in teaching and research excellence. The Health Sceinces Center in Denver houses the schools of Medicine, Nursing, Dentistry, Pharmacy, and the Graduate School. It also includes two teaching hospitals, the University of Colorado Hospital and Colorado Psychiatric Health. The Health Sciences Center currently has over $200 million in research and training grants as well as a $31 million Biomedical Research Building equipped for molecular biology, cancer, and neuroscience research. Other universities in Colorado include Colorado State University and the Colorado School of Mines.

The Colorado Community College System is the state's largest and fastest growing system of education. The system includes 13 state community colleges offering a variety of career and academic programs.

Colorado is also home to several accredited non-public four-year higher education institutions.
